Text: 2 Sam. 22:1-7
Title: “Jesus Christ: David’s Song of Salvation”
Subj: David’s deliverance as found in Christ

Intro: The Bible says, “Now David (the shepherd boy) was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to.  Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward.”  (1 Sam. 16:12-13)

So David started his life of service for God, filled with the Holy Spirit.  Do you know that your life of service for God did not begin until you received Christ and were filled with the Holy Spirit?  All before that moment was vanity--all after  that moment was meaningful and purposeful.

But though David was filled with the Holy Spirit he was a man of like passions such as we are, and his life took many twists and turns before his death.

In chronological order:

Occupationally
: David was a shepherd; a musician; a man of war; the king’s armourbearer; the king’s captain; a hunted man; an actor; an outlaw; a polygamist; a mercenary; a military leader; a ruler;  the king of Judah; the king of Israel;  a husband;  a father; a judge; a master builder and a master organizer.
Personally
: David was handsome, valiant, prudent, responsible, resourceful, fearless, wise, devoted, humble, a liar, fearful, obedient, respectful, merciful, thankful, tender-hearted, joyous, kind, lustful, adulterous, murderous, indignant, a sinner, a prayer, a faster, a bloody man, just and generous.
Spiritually
: David was filled with the Spirit; the Lord was with him; he inquired of the Lord; he was sensitive to the Lord; he was righteous; he encouraged himself in the Lord; he was God’s servant; David brought home the Ark of the Lord; his throne was established forever; his kingdom was established forever; the Lord preserved him; he did right in the eyes of the Lord; he did wrong in the eyes of the Lord; he despised the commandment of the Lord; he worshipped the Lord;  he was provoked by Satan; he believed the Lord; he built an altar to God; he sacrificed unto God; he pointed his nation to God; and he was used of the Spirit who filled him as a boy.
“So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.  And he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honour…”
  (1 Kgs. 2:10)

 Text: 2 Sam. 22:1-7, 17, 18, 20—““Jesus Christ: David’s Song of Salvation”--prayer

 I. DAVID’S SONG ABOUT THE LORD (v1) (Three things we see here)

A. David’s Song (sung to the Lord) (v1)

1. This was not a congregational song, but a melody of praise that arose from the deep reaches of David’s heart and overflowed onto his tongue.

“Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;”
 (Eph. 5:19)

           B.  Sung in David’s Day (“general time period”) (v1)
                 1. Did you know there are [only] 3 days when we should sing praise to the Lord

a. The day before deliverance (the day of trouble)

b. The day of deliverance (the day of mercy)

c. The day after deliverance (the day of peace)

Note: Go to God--first, give God the praise--first, wait on God—first.

            C. Sung to David’s Lord  (v1)

            1. Jehovah, the proper Name of the self-existing, ever-present God

            a. David knew Who he was dealing with, so must you

Note: Do you know that God is the only Person that no matter what you say about Him you are never exaggerating?

                        2. Jehovah delivered (“rescued, saved”) him

            a. Notice who the Lord saved David from

1) The hand (grasp) of his general enemies (“all”)

2) The hand (grasp) of his specific enemies (“Saul”)
                                                    a) From the grasp of all his enemies, including a king

b. The enemies the Lord will save you from

1) Your flesh/human nature is your enemy

“Because the carnal
(“fleshly”) mind is enmity (“an enemy”) against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.”  (Rom 8:7)

2) The world is your enemy

“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”
1John 2:16

3) Satan is your enemy

“Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.”
(2 Cor. 2:11)

II. David’s SONG DescriBing the Lord (v2)

Note:  The following describes Jehovah as to His provision, but notice David makes what Jehovah is as his own castle of protection.  So can you.

         A.     Jehovah is…
                1. My Rock (high “crag, cliff”)

a. Solid, immoveable, firm, protective (spiritually protected in Christ)
               2. My Fortress (“stronghold”)

a. A high-place, safe against attacks (spiritually/positionally located in Heaven).  Whatever happens to you here does not translate to Heaven.
               3. My Deliverer (“secure, save, cause to escape”)

a. The Christ who saves (spiritually safe from the just penalty of your sins)

III. DAVID’S SONG DESCRIBING GOD (v3)
          A
. God = Elohim (Triune God/Trinity: one God manifested by 3 Persons)
               1. “Jehovah is the Elohim of my Rock (Christ)”

Note: The Lord of the N.T. is the Jehovah of the O.T., and the Lord of the N.T. is Jesus Christ, who is therefore the Jehovah of the O.T.

               2. Christ is my rock (“a mountainous mass that speaks of unmovable strength; flat rock, boulder, block of stone”)

a. 7 times in the N.T. Christ is called a building/corner stone
                       b. So this Rock refers not only to God, but particularly to Christ, who is both God and Lord (reread 1. above)

3. Christ is worthy of trust (“confide in, put hope in;” “seek refuge, flee for protection;” fig. “spiritual refuge, trust in one’s God”)

4. Christ is my shield (“buckler, one who protects”)

a. We are in Christ and Christ is in us, therefore our protection
               5. Christ is the horn (“horn-like projection on the altar (where the sacrifice was made;” fig.: “strength”) of my salvation (“deliverance”)

a. Christ is our sacrifice and our strength to live the Christian life
               6. Christ is my high tower (“high place, secure height”)

            a. Christ is our security.  We should look up to Christ, but down on the world.
               7. Christ is my refuge (“place of escape”)

a. Christ is our “place to get away”
               8. Christ is my Saviour (“deliverance, rescue, victory”)

a. You are delivered from the power of your sin; you are rescued from the penalty of your sin; you get victory over the influence of sin

What does a Saviour do?

               9. Christ saves you from violence (“wrong, cruelty, injustice”)

a. From your violence on others. He changes you!

b. From others violence on you (they can only kill you!)

c. From the violence of Hell

Note: David said that the Lord who was God who was his Rock who was Christ “was all these things to him.”  If you are saved you can say, “Christ is all these things to me.”  If you are here without Christ, if you trust Christ as your Saviour, all these things will belong to you also.

IV. DAVID’S SONG OF DETERMINATION & DECISION (v4)

A. I Will (determination)

            B. Call on (“call unto God, cry out”) the Lord (decision)

Note that “David takes no credit to himself and he gives no credit to others.  He sees God as the Author of his deliverance, despite the human instruments that helped him.”  (Blaikie)

                        1. Why?  Because the Lord alone is worthy to be praised (“to make one’s boast, glorify”)

            C. So Shall I be Saved (“delivered”) from Mine Enemies (“foes”) (result)

Well, you say, “Easy for David to say, but you don’t know my circumstances.”

V. DAVID’S SONG DESPITE HIS CIRCUMSTANCES (v5-6)
(Notice these are all plurals)
           A
. When (not if) Waves (“breaking sea”) of Death (“separation”) Compassed (“surround, encompass”) Me

           B. When (not if) Floods (“torrent like a river”) of the Ungodly (“wicked”) Frightened (“terrified”) Me

           C. Sorrows (“pain, travail”) of Hell (“Sheol, the O.T. place of the dead”) Compassed (“encircled”) Me

1. The trip to death may be painful, but it is always purposeful

           D. Snares (“baited trap/cage”) of Death Prevented (“met, confronted”) Me

VI. DAVID’S SONG OF SALVATION  (v7)

In (not before or after)

A. David’s Distress (“To be in a narrow place, to be hard pressed upon, to be tied up; to have a pebble in your shoe”)  (v7)

1. David had physical distress, but behind it was the spiritual

2. God’s spiritual deliverance does not necessarily come in the sunshine but in the shadows of distress

3. First distress then deliverance

            B.  David’s Action (v7)

1. I called (“call, cry”) upon the Lord (Jehovah).  First things first!

            a. Why did David call on the Lord?  (see v2-3)
“Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?  Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life.”
(John 6:67-68)

2
.  I cried (“call, cry”) to my God (Elohim)

             C.  God’s Response to David (v7, 17, 18, 20)

1. He heard my voice out of His [heavenly] temple (v7)

2. He entertained my cry (into His ears)

3. He drew me out (v17)

4. He delivered me (v18)

                     5. He brought me forth (“out”) into a large (“broad roomy”) place (v20)

            a) Being born again is not confining!  Being saved is not depriving!

4. He delighted in me (“take pleasure in, be pleased with”) (v20)
At Jesus’ baptism and transfiguration: “And lo a voice from heaven, saying, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I Am well pleased…hear ye him’.”   Mt 3:17

Concl:  David, just like you, spent his life fighting his enemies.  Some are actual enemies; some are physical enemies; some are mental enemies; some are spiritual enemies and some are eternal enemies, like Hell.  But unlike some of you, David fought his enemies in the power of God, not the power of self. I wonder if you are tired of depending on self to route your enemies.
If you are here without Christ as your Saviour/Deliverer, that is your need.

Christian, are you tired of the battle?  Have you almost sung your last song?
Then you have forgotten the greatness of your God, the provision of the Father, the comfort of the Holy Spirit, and your salvation in Christ.  Determine this very day to deepen your trust in God.
