Text:  Gen. 3:13-15

Title:  “Jesus in Genesis—the Seed of Salvation”

Subj:  Christ in the O.T., the red thread of redemption throughout the Scriptures

Intro:  Genesis is the book of beginnings.  Almost all the great truths of  God are contained here in seed form.

“In the beginning”: the beginning of time!

“God created the heavens”: the beginning of space!

“And the earth”: the beginning of matter!

“And the Spirit of God”: the beginning of force!

“Moved”: the beginning of motion!

Here are the 5 main factors from which the unknowable of our universe can be divided and studied: time, space, matter, force, and motion.

In Genesis can be found the beginning of mankind and the beginning of man’s sin-nature.  We can also see the beginning of God’s provision for sin as innocent animals were scarified to provide covering for the nakedness of Adam and Eve.  This sacrificial system continued throughout the O.T. economy for the righteous Jew, but that system would not be sufficient in and of itself, and so the book of Genesis reveals to us that One would come, in the fullness of time, to die for the sins of the world.

Text:  Gen. 3:13-15 – “Jesus in Genesis—the Seed of Salvation” – prayer

I. THE SEED OF SIN (v12-13)

    A. Deception

        1. Appealed to mind, to reason (“Yea, hath God said?”)

            a. But what we believe, we believe by faith

        2. Eve was deceived by a higher power

            a. “Beguiled me” = caused me to forget

        3. Adam was deceived by the flesh

    B. Disobedience

        1. The result of thinking over deception (“I did eat”)

    C. Deeding

        1. Blaming another for the consequences of our sin

            a. (Adam) “The woman Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me”

“Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth He any man.”  Ja. 1:13

                1) Better you should blame the Devil than God!

            b. (Eve) “The serpent beguiled me.”

Note:  It is so still; the sinner first of all endeavors to throw the blame upon others as tempters, and then upon circumstances which God has ordained.  (v12,13)

II. THE SERPENT OF SIN (v14a)

    A. Satan

         1. Responsible

“... He (Satan) was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him...”  Jn. 8:44

              a. Was setting up his earthly kingdom

          2. Cursed

“Thou (Satan) hast been in Eden ... thou art the anointed cherub that covereth ... thou wast perfect ... til iniquity was found in thee ... and thou hast sinned ... and I (God) will destroy thee, O covering cherub ...”  Ez. 28:13-16

           3. Passes curse on to others

“He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning.”  1 Jn. 3:8

               a. Anything of Satan has a curse on it

                   1) Satan’s temptations are all beguiling, his arguments are all fallacies, his allurements are all cheats

               b. If you are used of the Devil, you are cursed

                   1) Sin deceives us, and by deceiving us, cheats us.  It is by the deceitfulness of sin that the heart is hardened.

“But exhort one another daily, while it is called today; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.”  Heb. 3:13

III. THE SITUATION OF SIN (v14b)

      A. Will either bring you to your belly or to your knees

      B. Makes you a dust-eater

Note:  Satan’s crime was that he tempted Eve to eat that which she should not, his punishment was that he would eat that which he would not.

           1. Eternal dust

               a. No substance

               b. No sustenance

               c. No surety

           C. East Dust Eternally

“  ... and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life.”

“The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent’s meat ...”   Isa. 65:25

                1. If God will not forgive the snake, what chance do you have?

                2. The only reality will be the flames of Hell!

“And the Devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire ... and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever ... And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”  Rev. 20:10, 15

IV. THE SEPARATION OF SIN (v15ab)

      A. Between snake and man

           1. The serpent remains a reminder to man of the first human sin

       B. Between Satan and man

            1. Satan must use deception, not confrontation

       C. Between offspring of Satan an offspring of Eve

            1. The lost sinner “represents” Satan

“He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning...”  1 Jn. 3:8

             2. Eve represents the Godly line

“Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for His Seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.”  1 Jn. 3:9

        D. Between Satan and the Son of God

“... for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in Me.”  Jn 14:30

V. THE SEQUEL OF SIN  (v15c)

     A. For the seed of the woman

          1. Bruised heel (saved)

              a. The height of a striking snake

              b. Sneakiness of a snake

              c. But no fatal

       B. For the seed of Satan

           1. Bruised heat (lost)

               a. Death blow to a snake  (cut off the head of sin!)

VI. THE SEED OF SALVATION (v15)

(Plan of Salv.)

       A. Christ

“... He (God) saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of One, And to thy Seed, which is Christ.”  Gal. 3:16

             1. His incarnation

                 a. Seed of a woman, human birth

             2. His virgin birth

                 a. “Her seed” without mention of a man

             3. His death and suffering (crushed heel)

                 a. Here is Christ’s humanity and suffering on the cross

             4. His victory over Satan (crushed head) and sin

“I Am He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I Am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”  Rev. 1:18

Concl:  The beginning of anything is always important, for it sets the direction toward the conclusion.  Sin entered in the very beginning because of a snake, a woman, and a man.  But you say, “But that is not my fault, I was not there!”  but had you been there, you would have done the very same thing!  And so sin has passed through all men to us today.  But in the beginning was a Saviour also, One that would pay the sin-debt of the whole world with His death on the cross of Calvary.  Today, again, we some face to face with the sin, the sinner and the Saviour.  Will you be saved today?  Will you trust the only One that could die for your sins?

Christian, are you being deceived by the Devil?  Have you let the things of this world come into your life, step by step, until you have been beguiled; causing you to forget what Christ has done for you.  Come back today—He is waiting.
